The most recent bout of Nexus trickery has caught Stratos in its net, but a battlemage of the Imperial Legion isn’t about to let a little thing like being turned into a woman keep her from her duty. That’s why she’s manning the banner-draped desk in the Plaza. Since her usual armor no longer sits properly, she’s borrowed a red Starfleet uniform courtesy of a helpful captain, and draped a Legion cloak over it to try and avoid confusion. It also means the good tribune resembles a very confused cosplayer, but hopefully no-one will tell her.*

In between assisting the odd Nexus-goer, LOLed or otherwise, she’s writing something out on a sheet of parchment. When she’s done, she sets her quill aside and spins the notice around so it’s legible for visitors, then rises and lifts her voice to make an announcement.

“As a general announcement, the Imperial Legion is now offering minor bounties on various items and information of interest. Those interested should speak with me, or whichever legionnaire is on duty at this post.”

She settles back into her chair, arranging her cloak around her. From beneath the desk she produces a bottle of brandy and pours herself a glass. “And for anyone else, what are the worst conditions you’ve had to work under? I’d like to remind myself that matters could be worse…”

*Please do tell her.

Freddy’s pretty sure he’s dead. He’d like to believe everything – the heist, the getaway, the bloodbath back at the rendezvous – was just a fucked up dream. He’d like to. There’s no hole in his cheek, no bullets in his gut, but he’s still wearing the same clothes – black suit, white shirt, and black tie – and they’re still soaked with blood. There’s blood in his hair, splattered across his face, and coating his hands.

He’s sitting on the curb outside of something that resembles the type of cheap convenience store familiar to someone from Los Angeles during the late 20th century. Next to him is an open bag of Doritos, four empty bottles of shitty beer, plus two more unopened bottles of that same shitty brand... and also a welcoming pamphlet.

While he’s not exactly feeling any better than he was when he first woke up, the alcohol is at least helping him settle into a sort of numbness. He opens the pamphlet and reads. Most of it fails to register.

‘Do you have a question for the Nexus?’ the pamphlet says.

‘What the fuck?’ is all that comes to mind. He sighs and rubs his temple, before burying his face in his arms. It's been a long goddamn day. Thinking it over though, he does actually have a question:

“Does everyone who dies get sent here? Or is it just like”–his voice still sounds hoarse, so he coughs into his fist and clears his throat–“only certain ones?”

He tries to brush his hair back, but his bangs just flop back into his face. He opens another bottle. Don't worry, he’s not going to cry or whine about shit. He may be a hot fucking mess, but he’s still a tough guy, okay?

A tall, and dignified woman dressed in Victorian gowns sits quietly at one of the Plaza tables, with a few sheets of parchment scattered out on the table before her.

She paused for a moment, uncertain about the words she wants to write.

Glancing around her surroundings, she takes a moment to compose her thoughts. "It can be difficult to be separated by someone close to you. How do you keep a connection, when more than just distance separates you?"

PSA: regarding image hosting

If you're using Photobucket to host images on your character's journal, please be advised that Photobucket has just recently disabled third-party hosting and hotlinking unless you pony up $400 per year. Some images on mine got broken and I'm currently rehosting on Cubeupload with no problems so far.

Things coming and going in the Nexus is hardly alarming once you've settled into the way this place works. Sometimes a water fountain you saw yesterday will vanish overnight, or a particular chair in the Plaza will feel the need to switch its location. Maybe these objects are travellers like the rest of the denizens, eager for new points of view? Or maybe it's just magic.

A mirror is in a central area of the Plaza today. It is an ornate antique, clearly. The frame looks to be quite aged, but its full-length reflective surface is clear and spotless.

There's no note, no invitation, no instructions. It's just a mirror, it seems. Might as well see how you're looking today before going on your way?

((Here it is, the Rule 63 LOL! Whether it shows a reflection or maybe even your character's true self, they will shortly find themselves another sex/gender after gazing at themselves in the mirror. The effects wear off when you want them to, be it a day, a week, or even permanent! It's up to you!

This account, as it is a prop and not a person, will reply only once per person for the initial effect taking place. It's just a mirror! A magical/demonic/enchanted(?) mirror, but still just a mirror. So it's time to threadhop! Time for all your characters to move around and witness the chaos all their friends and enemies are experiencing.

As our first OOC post about this event says, please be respectful and keep our #6 rule firmly in mind while this plays out. This is for fun and shouldn't be offensive or upsetting to any of our players. If there are problems or questions as to what is or isn't okay, contact the mods right away and we'll help you sort it out. HAVE FUN!))

Hermione is wandering the Plaza area of the Nexus, with no particular goal in mind. She is closely followed by a large orange cat, who seems to twirl around her ankles just at the right time to avoid being stepped on, but still be close to the young woman in question.

Suddenly, Hermione stops, just outside the grand library and looks up to the immense building with a little bit of awe, a lot of interest, and a glee that is very close to 'kid-in-a-candystore'. But even though every bone in her body wants to go into that library and explore (and get lost in the books), Hermione has paused. A slight confused look on her face.

She finds a place to sit, nearby the library, looking up at the building. The orange cat claims a seat in her lap.

"Would you rather take time to improve your own skills, or teach others to be better people?"

Hey everybody! It's been an age and a half since we did a silly no-consequences LOL event, hasn't it? If you're craving one, you're in luck – Our retro asses want to bring a tired old classic to the Nexus: Rule 63! A lighthearted (or not, depending on how your character feels!) chance for your characters to briefly see the world as another sex/gender (however you prefer to phrase it or play it.)

Remember that LOL events – as all events on the comm – are entirely optional. When the OP goes up sometime between now and Sunday, simply opt-in if you choose by replying to it. If you don't reply, consider your character safe! This event will be temporary, as they all are, but, heck, if you want your character to stay their new selves for a longer period of time or even permanently that's your call! Fun is the name of the game, after all, and it can last as long as you're enjoying yourself.

As a little caveat, and one which I honestly don't think I need to say because I know our playerbase is generally very mindful and cool: Just remember Community Rule #6 (and check our updated rules, by the way!)

Family Matters

There's a starship captain in the Plaza, sitting at an outdoor cafe style table which bears a half-consumed cup of coffee and a glowing, transparent datapad. Jim Kirk is not in uniform, clad in well-worn civilian clothes, though given that his shirt says PROPERTY OF STARFLEET ACADEMY in faded text, he's probably not trying to be covert. He's fairly focused on the datapad, and one might assume that he's catching up on reports or requisition forms during his off-hours if not for the quietly contemplative look on his face.

And, of course, the fact that he's chosen to take a break here rather than anywhere near Starfleet property.

His thoughts don't remain a mystery for long, as this does tend to be the place to go for advice, no matter how small the matter. "How's your relationship with your family? Have you ever tried to reconnect after spending years apart?"

There's an empty chair on the other side of the table. Feel free to have a seat, if you'd like.

Pardon Our Dust!

You might have noticed the rules post moving around and appearing on your read pages should you follow the OOC comm with it. Nothing to fear, though! Our old rule page was unable to be edited due to our graphic design friend having been the one to post it. So we just moved it over to a new post that we can tweak and edit as need be.

There IS an addition to it as well that we'd like to take a second to point out. The new Rule #2 is about the question format of the community. For your convenience, here's it is in its entirety for your review:

2.) A VITAL RULE OF THUMB FOR THE COMM: Top posts must ALWAYS contain a question! Your character MUST pose a question to the Nexus if you are making a post unless otherwise discussed and okayed by a mod. A character can ask verbally, via text or audio, digital or paper, psychic or any other form of communication they prefer. Another method, though harder to do properly and will be under closer scrutiny by the mods, is a question posed by the narrative of your post. An example being: "Gish is trailing tar EVERYWHERE and won't stop! Who's going to clean up this mess!?"

Additionally: Please avoid having your character ask where they are! The setting has pamphlets, signs and helpful NPCs that can answer these sorts of things, detailing the nature and the name of the Nexus. One can ask details about how it works or ask about settings within the setting (eg, what's a good restaurant around here), but please consider carefully if this info couldn't be gathered with the informational methods mentioned.

This is a rule is not only to keep to classic Nexus roleplay, but also to ensure that every post is engaging and contains a sufficient hook for other characters to interact with yours. If the mods see a post that doesn't adhere to these standards, one of us will message you and ask you to edit it. We will provide suggestions if necessary or requested.

Links to the new rules page are being turned over as well, but don't hesitate to let me know if I missed one somewhere!

This is also a perfect time to review if you, the comm's users, would like to address anything, either with proposed other rule additions or changes, or what you'd like to see from the game going forward. Let us know in the comments or via PM!

3.) We operate on the Golden Rule: Treat others as you would want to be treated.
This means the potential for moderator intervention if you:

   a. Make OOC comments criticizing another person’s plots, writing style, character, or the player themselves.

    b. Attempt to make other players unwelcome for any reason. If you feel another player’s behavior is in any way not fitting the spirit of the community, we ask that you contact one or more moderators so that we can assess and deal with the situation.

   c. Knowingly and willfully disrespect another player’s stated boundaries regarding communication or subject matter. This means that members of the community should be open and honest about their own discomforts if the subject should arise. Speak up early to avoid unnecessary discomfort and always make your boundaries clear to other players involved.

    d. Publicly or privately harass, intimidate, or bully other players. We take these issues very seriously, especially in private contexts. Because others are not immediately aware of what goes on in private messages, it is important to know the signs of bullying and contact one or more moderators if you feel another person’s behavior at all seems confrontational, manipulative, or passive-aggressive. **Signs of an Unhealthy Roleplay Relationship: A Must-Read!**

4.) While the content of this community is not strictly 18+ , membership is. All members must be over 18 years of age at the time of joining. If we find out otherwise, offending members will be removed.

5.) Not Safe for Work (NSFW) images and content are not allowed on the comm’s main page.
Photographs of real life death, violence, nudity, or sexual acts are not allowed, nor are drawn images of excessive gore, full-frontal nudity, or sexual acts. Remember that some of us tag in our spare time at work and use your best judgment when you choose what content to post.

    a. Characters having or discussing their own sexuality is normal and acceptable, and jokes of a sexual nature are not against the rules or spirit of the community. If you think sexual behavior between two characters is skirting the line of publicly appropriate, we kindly ask that you take it to PMs or journals. Being courteous of other players’ boundaries is expected in these situations. If you aren’t sure your partner would be comfortable with certain sexual humor or acts, we encourage you to ask them OOC. Likewise, if another player’s sexual humor or content directed at your character makes you uncomfortable, please privately and kindly speak to them.

   b. Violence as a result of characters fighting is not against the rules or spirit of the community, but if the fighting becomes especially graphic or intense a warning in post titles or a shift to PMs or private journals would be appropriate.

   c. Swearing is not against the rules or the spirit of the community, but humbly bear in mind that intense language is not everyone’s cup of tea. Having said this…

6.) No language disparaging another player’s race, sex, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, or religion will be tolerated publicly or privately in the community. If your character would express any sentiments against a group of real life people (i.e. – anything that is not considered purely ‘fantasy racism’) please clear it with your roleplay partner first and make note of it in the post title so that others may avoid potentially upsetting material.

   a. An addendum to fantasy racism: In-character differences of opinions and antagonism are great and we absolutely want to foster an environment where characters feel as free to agree as to disagree. Having said this, don’t cross the line between, for example, “My character hates elves,” and “I hate elves, so I am expressing it at length through my character.” The difference is usually plain to outside observers. Your character should not be a mouthpiece for personal biases. Use your best judgment when you believe your character’s opinions may cross a line into deeply insulting another player’s character concept. OOC communication is your friend!

   b. An addendum to sexuality: If you feel that a player’s presentation or discussion of certain taboo or shocking sexual themes such as bestiality, pedophilia, incest, sexual assault, etc, are not in the spirit of the community, please discuss these issues with a moderator. We will use our best judgment in deciding which course of action to take. This absolutely does NOT mean you should contact a moderator because you dislike a player’s headcanons of their characters as gay/bi, trans, etc. (unless the portrayal is perceived as an offensive stereotype, in which case mods will review the content and take appropriate action.)

7.) Rules for characters allowed: As a general rule all characters are allowed. This is a no-app, no-activity check (AC) community. Come and go as you please, have fun, and make friends. Original characters (OCs) are just as welcome as canon characters. Note:

  a. Your character may not be a real person unless you are playing an Alternate History version of that real person. Preferably, in this case, from an established Alt History canon. For example, you cannot play as Actual President Abraham Lincoln, but you may play as Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

   b. Gods and religious figures are not against the rules or the spirit of the community, but if you’re unsure about a character or concept always feel free to contact a mod. Our job is to support rp, not to squash it, and we want to help.

   c. This is a multi-dimensional, pan-fandom roleplay setting. You might encounter duplicates of your character (dupes), alternate universe versions of your character (AUs), and more. If you aren’t comfortable with this, tag your threads with “Dupes/AU: no,” or, if you are, “Dupes: yes”. If another version of your character approaches you for roleplay and you aren’t comfortable with that, please kindly contact them OOC in PMs stating your boundaries. If another person asks not to interact with your dupes, please be respectful of their boundaries. Dupes of canon characters may not be denied the right to roleplay in the community based solely on that fact.

   d. Of note: The only time you may refuse another player from playing a dupe of your character is if it is your original character.

    e. Facecasts/Play-bys (FCs/PBs – Using an actor as reference for your character’s appearance) do not belong to any one player. You always have the right to avoid interactions if you feel uncomfortable around someone sharing your FC, but please be understanding of their right to reference that FC.

   f. Not a rule, but: Adding your character’s canon or some indication that they are an OC in your profile is helpful for other players.

8.) Spoilers, Timelines, Fourth Walls:

   a. As a general rule of thumb, three weeks is the socially acceptable time period before you should discuss spoilery content without a clear and obvious warning.

   b. If your character comes from the same canon but different timeline as another person’s character, hash it out privately OOC. Sometimes this creates great excitement and friction, but it’s up to every player to decide whether they want to deal with that.

   c. When it comes to revealing to other characters that they are in a forums-based roleplay game, that they come from a fictional story, etc, no exceptions: You must ask the other player’s permission. Always. That is a huge bomb to drop, and some players may not want to deal with the consequences of that.

9.) Events/LOLs:

Events, sometimes called LOLs, come in many flavors, from over-arching plots like invasions and acts of villainy to freak happenings like age swaps and terrain changes. Players are always allowed to opt out of these and should never feel pressured to participate when they don’t want to. We ask that members respect players’ decisions regarding participation and/or non-participation, including but not limited to having patience for linear timeline players affected by events. All members are equally encouraged to propose events for the community by speaking with moderators first to be sure that everything is above board and can be well-organized. Some events may be delayed or declined based on proximity to other events or inappropriate content, but as a general rule we want to support events and their hosts.

10.) Rules Lawyering and History of Egregious Behavior:

   a. ‘Rules lawyering’ means intentionally skirting the line of breaking the rules without technically breaking the rules, then citing the fact that you didn’t break the rules as grounds for evading moderator action. This will get you banned.

   b. Having been banned from other communities for toxic behavior in the past is grounds for being banned from this community. If any players of the community have proof that another member of the community was banned for toxic behavior it is important that they contact a moderator.

11.) All rules which apply to Nexus-Crossings also apply to its corresponding OOC community and any officially-hosted off-site events such as Movie Nights.

Penalties for infractions of rules are on a two-strike basis:

a.) First strike results in a conversation between moderator(s) and rule-breaker(s) regarding proper behavior and a notice that in the future rule-breaking behavior will not be tolerated.

b.) Second strike will result in a ban. Bans are final and non-contestable.

In short: Be kind, be thoughtful, and be open to communication. Know the signs of toxic behavior, respect other people and their characters, and make the community as happy and healthy as you can. Remember that the moderators are here to help. We want to create the most inviting community possible, because roleplay should be fun above all else.

If you ever have questions about how the site or the community work, we want to be here to help. If you have a disagreement with a moderator, it is your right to bring the issue up with other moderators and you will not be punished for doing so. We take your comfort in the community very seriously.
